Yangzhou High School of Jiangsu Province was founded in 1902, which grew out of Yidong School, is a very famous school in China. The struggling course of YangzhouHigh School witnessed the development of Chinese fundamental education from traditional to modern. The study of the development course and successful schooling experience will probably benefit the current education reform and future education.
    Yangzhou High school, one of the key and model schools in JiangsuProvince, is among the first to have been credited as a national model high school. It is well-known for its high ideals, famous teachers, school spirit and talented alumni. The massive alumni cherish the prime time they spent here, where they received a solid foundation of elementary education. Among them are Jiang Zemin, former president of China, Zhu Ziqin, a distinguished writer and scholar; 42 members of the Academy of Sciences of China and western countries, under - Secretaries -General of the United Nations, Bi Jilong and Xie Qimei; and a large number of experts, scholars, professors, cadres at all levels and laborers of high quality at all walks of life.

1.      The campus is filled with high spirits and under standardized management.

Yangzhou High School covers an area of over l 20,000 square metres, with building space of over 40,000 square meters. The layout of the campus is organized and provides an elegant, picturesque and tranquil learning environment. Our school is well equipped. To meet the needs of teaching and learning on campus, we have set up libraries, labs, electronic reading rooms, gym, track and field, arts room, etc. Every classroom is equipped with multi-media teaching facilities.

There are now 49 classes in our school, with over 2500 students, aged between 16 and 18. Students on campus are energetic, active and hardworking. We have a staff of 213, including 180 teachers, among whom are 61 Senior Teachers (9 Teachers of Special Classification included) and 27 of them have got Master's degree. Teachers in our school are professional and with high morality. They love and cultivate the students diligently, have a high teamwork spirit, are popular among the students and are praised by society.

2.      Education in our school is student-oriented and attaches importance to morality.

To cultivate students well is the goal and purpose of our school. To be a successful student, one should first be a successful person. Therefore, our school attaches more importance to moral education.

(1)     Develop the Yangzhou-High-School spirit, teach students to have a sense of responsibility

The essence of Yangzhou-High-School spirit is to be an up-right person, a person responsible for society. We try to make students aware of the traditional culture and spirit of our school by showing them around the Shuren Hall and school history exhibition hall and visit some alumni. For example, in June, 2006, Yemao, who graduated from our school in 1995, was elected trustee of the Board of Cornel University of USA became the first Chinese elected trustee of the Board in the Evergreen State College. Shi Yonghui, having graduated from our school in 1998, achieved great scientific fruits on cotton genes after great efforts. His findings have made great contributions to the improvement of the production quality and quantity of our country. By learning from these examples, students are developing their love and respect for our school and our country. They begin to think about the responsibility for society and become more enthusiastic about life and study.

(2)   Make use of every positive factor and construct an effective moral education network

The President of the Student Union is determined by democratic election. The annual election is organized by the Student Administration Department and the Student Union. The student candidates exhibit their personal information in the school windows. Then, they each make a speech. Finally, all students in our school vote for their ideal president. The whole election process is superintended by parent representatives. So a new round of Student Union is coming into being. The voting process develops students’ sense of mastering and management.

Many kinds of scholarships are set up. Our school has set up 9 kinds of scholarships sponsored by some old alumni and social industry, which can add up to 400,000 RMB. 20% of the students benefit from these scholarships to ensure that they will finish their high school education successfully. Besides, the care and love they received will help them develop sympathy for others.

We also have Parents Committee, which is made up of parents of different social backgrounds. The committee is to better coordinate the relationship among school, parents and students.

Our school has set up the first psychological consultancy centre of high school in Yangzhou. This psychological consultancy centre is supported by the school leaders. This centre is in the charge of a specialized teacher and assisted by many key teachers. The psychological consultancy centre spreads the psychological health knowledge to the students and improve their psychological quality by lecturing, class presentation, consultancy and person-to-person communication. Till now we have successfully helped some students with psychological problems to develop good attitude toward life and study.

3. Carry out the various campus activities to foster student-oriented idea

Our school has organized various class meeting assessment activities, which set honesty education and standardized behavior education as the theme, in order to build students’ upright character. The head-teachers make full use of every chance, including the morning meeting, class meeting, home visits, and use all sorts of educational forms to teach students about the social morality, family morality, campus culture and Internet morality.

Every two years campus cultural art festival is held in our school. During this festival, various activities are held, such as English speech contests, Chinese recitation contests, calligraphy exhibitions, English play performance, personal shows of talent, so on and so forth. All these activities help develop various interests and teamwork spirit of the students. Besides, we have a campus radio station and school TV broadcasting center, which is supervised by teachers and conducted by students themselves. There are different students’ clubs, such as the literary society called New Bud, Painting Club, Photographing Club, the stamp association, etc. These clubs help to form a cultivated, healthy campus atmosphere. As a result, students’ awareness of self-development is cultivated.

Our school holds some meaningful scientific activities, such as “think with your hands”, all these are aimed to lead and instruct students to form their ways if study, which consists of thinking by yourself, cooperation with others. We create these activities based on the facts: all students can take part in them, students can apply their theory gained to practice, and students can have an idea of creative thinking. During the process of the activity, students should keep to the rule: these steps (including choosing the topic, doing research and designing, presenting). Through all kinds of activities, the students in YangzhouHigh School are full of youthfulness and energy and they are students of all-round abilities.

4. Careful administration to promote quality

Our school always bears these in our mind: the development of students is the foundation of running a school, the quality of teaching is our lifeline. So we focus our attention on teaching, regarding the classroom teaching as the core. At the same time, we insist on preparing lessons collectively. Now we take the opportunity of the new curriculum to promote our standard and taste of running a school thoroughly.

    We seize the chance of the construction of new curriculum.

According to the requirements from our country, county and our school itself, we make full use of every curriculum source available to build our own curriculum system which can meet students’ requirements of development from all aspects. In order to ensure the conduction of this system, our school also makes some relative documents.

   Up to now, our school has basically built not only national curriculum, local curriculum but the one of our own school as well. Some teachers in our school wrote many books, some of which are spoken highly of by some famous presses, what’s more, one book is being used by our own students. Meanwhile, our teachers wrote several books according to the condition of our students, so several new courses are taken, such as computer science, appreciation of some English films, the family album of the USA. Not only are teachers busy with their teaching, but the students are absorbed in study. They divide themselves into several groups to explore some subjects they are interested in. Generally speaking, one group has one teacher to guide them. In a year they will present their results. As a result, we have two volumes of the reports from students.

Recently, the Ministry of Education approved the provincial program of college entrance exam. We think this program is very good, which will improve our education for all-round development and build up students’ all-round ability. We always focus our efforts on these aspects, and we did a great job in the last few college entrance exams. Now, we have every reason to believe we can do better in the future.

5. Strengthen international communication and broaden our horizons.

In order to broaden our horizons, learn advanced experience and logos and communicate with foreign education and cultures, we think expanding communication with others is the basic and effective way.

Every year, a lot of activities of different levels between cities, provinces and countries about teaching are held in our school. Besides, many scholars and experts come here to make speeches. Meanwhile, many leaders and teachers from other schools come to visit our school or communicate with us. These activities, to some extent, spread our experience of running a school and help us learn a lot from others.

Since 1997, there are over 10 foreign teachers coming to our school, introducing western cultures and language, which has achieved a good effect. There are also over 15 teachers altogether in our school taking part in China-USA teachers exchange program and other international programs. In addition, we have established a good relationship with some foreign schools including a Korean school and two British schools. Every year different exchange programmes are carried out between us. During the programme, students from both countries exchanged different education and cultures . Both teachers and students took an active part in the discussion about cultural differences, educational ideas, teaching practice and customs.

To advance with the times, the International Department was founded in the school and brought in American courses of high school in 2009, which is aimed to strengthen international communication and broaden our horizons.

Yangzhou High School, one of 100 history schools, had covered itself with great glory, but after all they belong to the past, now we still have a lot to do to gain more achievements. In the following days, we will inherit and polish the concept of running a school, devoting ourselves to building a first -class modern high school while maintaining its unique characteristics and the worldwide highest academic caliber. And we are trying our best to maintain the leading position in the field of education in Jiangsu Province or even in the whole country, making greater contributions to promoting the fundamental education in China.
